Meet Dena Comley

I am Dena Comley, a long-time Carleton Place resident, small business owner, mum of three, and lifelong environmentalist. I’ve lived, worked, and raised my family here since 2006, and I’m deeply invested in the long-term health and wellbeing of our community.

My formal training is in environmental and geotechnical engineering, where I learned to read plans and reports, interpret provincial standards, and understand how infrastructure projects are planned and built. For the past term on council, that technical background has helped me ask better questions, understand the trade-offs in front of us, and make informed decisions about growth, infrastructure, and land use.

Beginning well before my council work, I spent many years involved with local not‑for‑profits, committees of council, and business and environmental boards. I’ve chaired the Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA), the Carleton Place Youth Centre, and the Environmental Advisory Committee, and served on the boards of the Urban Forest Committee and the Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, I’ve represented Carleton Place with the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority and on the Lanark County OPP Detachment Board. These roles have strengthened my understanding of climate realities, public safety, local business needs, and the importance of strong partnerships across the region.

Outside of council and business, you’ll most often find me in the garden, backcountry camping, or cooking and sharing good food with family and friends. Growing up on a beef farm taught me early about hard work, stewardship of the land, and the value of community. Those lessons, combined with the daily experience of raising three kids who use our parks, trails, and facilities, ground every decision I make: practical, community-focused, and always with an eye to the future.

My goal is simple, to be the best councillor I can be, in order to ensure the future health and prosperity of the Town of Carleton Place and its residents.

Core Priorities

Dena's Vision for Carleton Place

Smart, Responsible Growth

As Carleton Place continues to grow, we must carefully balance development, services, and infrastructure so we can welcome newcomers while maintaining — and improving — quality of life for everyone who already calls this community home.

Community Investment

Continued smart investment in recreation facilities, green spaces, core infrastructure, accessibility, and community programmes is essential to keep pace with growth while protecting affordability and quality of life for both residents and local businesses.

Protecting our Environment & Planning for the Future

I push for decisions that protect natural spaces, cut emissions & waste and prepare our community for the realities of a changing climate. This work needs to continue. The triple bottom line is important. People-Planet-Profit.

Safe & Connected Neighbourhoods

As Carleton Place's represenative on the Lanark County OPP detachment Board, I've worked directly with police leadership and community partners on local policing priorities. I'll continue advocating for responsive policing, safer streets and neighbourhoods where residents feel connected and secure.

Communication

I believe communication has improved this past term, and that progress needs to continue. Communication about safety, services, and community issues must be accessible, transparent, and genuinely useful for residents. It needs to be collaborative, consistent, and clear — focused on listening as much as informing. One simple way to stay connected is through CP Scoop, the Carleton Place newsletter created for residents.

Affordability

We are all concerned about the rising cost of living. Balancing costs and services must always keep the taxpayer at the centre. That means working to keep taxes as low as possible, actively seeking alternative funding models, and advocating for a sustainable municipal funding framework within the province so communities like ours can plan responsibly for the long term.

Committee Leadership

Proven Experience in Community Leadership

With deep roots in Carleton Place and a track record of service on key regional boards, I bring proven, practical community leadership to every decision I’m part of.
With deep roots in Carleton Place and a track record of service on key regional boards, I bring proven, practical community leadership to every decision I’m part of.
I currently serve on the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) Board, helping guide decisions on watershed management, flood prevention, and land use that balance environmental protection with the needs of local residents.
I also serve on the Lanark County OPP Detachment Board, working with police leadership and community partners to set policing priorities and  ensure local policing remains responsive, transparent, and focused on the safety and wellbeing of our town.
Since moving to town in 2006 I have  contributed to multiple local boards and committees, including being a founding member and chair of the Environemtnal Advisory Committee (CPEAC)
and a member of the Urban Forest River Coridor Commitee.
I have been the past chair of the Carleton Place Youth Centre Board and the Downtown Buisness Improvement Area (BIA).
I am also an active member of Carleton Place Chamber of Commerce and the Roy Brown Legion
I  always have the the same approach: listen carefully, weigh different viewpoints, and push for practical, balanced solutions that keep Carleton Place moving forward. This combination of business ownership, municipal experience, and board work gives me a proven track record of community leadership grounded in real‑world impact, not titles.
